Coach Huckaby, the Community Rowing of San Diego volunteer Managing Director, has dedicated her adult life to the children of the South Bay. She started out as a biology and chemistry teach in 1996 at the Chula Vista High School, where she was also the head junior varsity basketball coach for 9 years. In 2004, Coach Huckaby switched to teaching physical education, then transferred to Sweetwater Union High School to continue teaching physical education and coaching basketball. She was the athletic director at the Sweetwater Union High School from 2018-2021, and was named CIF Model Coach of the Year in 2019. Even though Coach Huckaby officially retired in the 2019-2020 school year, she continues to be the SUHI athletic director and is going into her 18th year of working at the school.

Coach Huckaby has loved sports and fitness her entire life. Being an avid surfer and SUPer, Coach Huckaby discovered rowing in 2017 as another great way to enjoy San Diego's waterways while further improving her fitness for her other favorite sports. She quickly became hooked on rowing and found a way to combine her love of the sport and her devotion to the children of the South Bay through her work at CRSD. Coach Huckaby has been a volunteer coach at Community Rowing of San Diego since 2017 and has devoted herself to creating camps, afterschool programs, and field trips to get local kids out on the water gaining confidence, water sense, fitness, and a different perspective. She also takes the fun and fitness of rowing directly to students by teaching ErgEd, an indoor fitness education program, at local schools through a grant from The George Pocock Rowing Foundation. Despite everything Coach Huckaby has balanced on her full plate, she makes it a point to greet every child who comes to CRSD individually, learning each name, and making sure they all feel welcome!
