Community Rowing of San Diego
Coach Mahinda started rowing over 35 years ago, as a middle school student in Colombo, Sri Lanka. He has raced in many regattas, including the Hong Kong rowing nationals. Coach Mahinda is certified by both USRowing and Concept2, and he has been a CRSD volunteer row coach since 2018. One of his favorite things about coaching rowing is seeing a novice rower “get it” for the first time, and helping each student discover their own style that allows them to row comfortably and efficiently.
Coach Mahinda has had a lifelong obsession with things that fly. He currently conducts failure analysis on remotely piloted aircraft for the military. Outside his weekday job and the weekends he spends coaching rowing and working on improving the CRSD boathouse, Coach Mahinda devotes his time to mentoring local youth through middle school STEM outreach programs and various college student mentorships. He loves taking his mentees on tours of his employer's manufacturing and testing facilities almost as much as he loves playing his guitar and sharing funny stories about his childhood in Sri Lanka.
